Smart Home Electrical Upgrades to Consider This Year

Not every "smart" upgrade needs new wiring. Some are just an app bolted onto existing circuits. The ones worth planning for electrically are the ones that add real load or need dedicated infrastructure.

Upgrades that actually need electrical work

Upgrades that usually don't

Smart bulbs, smart plugs, and most smart thermostats work with existing wiring and don't require an electrician. A thermostat that needs a "C wire" your system doesn't have is a common exception, though, so it's worth checking before you buy. If you're unsure what your current wiring supports, our electrical repair and inspection service can give you a quick answer.

Planning ahead pays off here specifically

Because smart-home and EV demand both add to a panel's total load, this is one area where planning two or three moves ahead avoids paying for a panel upgrade twice. Adding devices one at a time without a capacity plan is the most common way homeowners end up back at square one. If you're considering more than one of these upgrades over the next few years, it's worth having a single conversation about panel capacity now.
