People use "electrician" and "electrical engineer" interchangeably, and most of the time it doesn't matter. But when you're planning a project, knowing which one to call can save you real money and time.
The short version
An electrician installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems using established codes and standards. An electrical engineer designs those systems, working out load calculations, circuit layouts, and equipment specifications before any wire gets pulled. For a straightforward job (a new outlet, a swapped breaker, a light fixture), you want an electrician. On a project that involves new capacity, a service upgrade, or equipment that didn't exist when the building was wired, you want engineering input first.
Where the line gets blurry
Most residential and light-commercial electrical work doesn't require a formal engineering degree. A licensed electrician with field experience handles load calculations, panel sizing, and code compliance every day. The distinction matters most on larger or unusual projects: a garage conversion that needs a sub-panel, an EV charger install on an older service, a commercial tenant build-out, or a solar interconnection. These benefit from someone thinking through the whole system's capacity, not just the immediate fix.
Questions that tell you which one you need
- Are you adding new electrical capacity, or fixing something that already exists? New capacity leans toward engineering-level planning.
- Is this a single-point repair (an outlet, a switch, a breaker) or a system change (a sub-panel, a new circuit type, a major appliance)?
- Does the project need permit-ready documentation for an inspector or a bank, beyond the standard permit pull?
Our approach
We staff both. For a straightforward repair, our licensed electricians handle it directly. For a project that needs a load calculation, a panel design, or an EV charger circuit sized correctly for future use, our electrical engineering team plans it before installation starts, so you're not paying twice because the first fix undersized the system.
